Leaning Too Heavily on Reason

Page: 53

Step we are on: Step Two

Chapter: "We Agnostics"

Subject: Faith, Intellect, Doubt, Logic, Reason

We are still on Step Two. We are seeing that intellectual reasoning, the power of our thinking mind, are of some value.

But, it will not take us far enough.

We are not going to think our way out of our problem!

  • How were we welcomed?
Friendly hands had stretched out in welcome.
(Note:  Did you receive a warm welcome on your arrival at A.A.?)

  • How did we feel about our sense of reason?
We were grateful that Reason had brought us so far.

(Note:   Did going to meetings and not drinking make sense?)

Reason - 1. the power or faculty of understanding and inferring 2. common sense.
The Winston Simplified Dictionary – 1938

  • What could we not do?
But somehow, we couldn't quite step ashore.

(Note:  When someone said, “Take the Steps by the clear-cut  directions in the Big Book,” what did you do?)

  • What were we relying on?
Perhaps we had been leaning too heavily on Reason that last mile and we did not like to lose our support

(Note:  “Since I am going to meetings and not drinking why should I do this other stuff?  I’m doing just fine and I am not going to humiliate myself by taking these Steps.  I really don’t need  them.”)

  • What do we need to do at this point?
That was natural, but let us think a little more closely.

Tomorrow
  • What had happened without us being aware of it?
  • What did we have confidence in? (2 sentences)
  • What was a sort of what?
  • To what had we been faithful?
  • When was faith not a part of our daily lives?
