 Chapter: 6 “Into Action”

Subject:   Discussing ourselves with another person

Good morning. Now that we have taken Steps Three and Four and have decided to put the Program of Alcoholics Anonymous to the test, we are ready to go into action.

Prior to spiritual awakening and adopting a spiritual way of life, alcoholics are phonies. They are stark raving mad liars, either painfully aware of their disingenuousness or painlessly unaware of their artificiality because they are either too self-absorbed or else inebriated to notice much.

It’s a bi-polarity that makes for some rather inconsistently unpleasant personalities.  Harms unto others abound in the life of the narcissistic alkie and unfortunately also in the lives of just about anyone who gets involved with him - even those he purports to love.

  • Is the alcoholic about as honest about his life as anyone else?
More than most people, the alcoholic leads a double life.
Yes, the world is full of phony, lying, hypocrites - but among alcoholics, there are even more of them.  There are many instances in this book where the co-authors illustrate the difference between alcoholics and non-alcoholics.  This is just another distinctive trait of the alcoholic making him quite a  different creature than most other people.

  • Is the alcoholic genuine with others?
He is very much the actor.

  • Does he let others know what he is really like? Two sentences

To the outer world he presents his stage character. This is the one he likes his fellows to see.

  • What is he looking to do by this "false advertising?
He wants to enjoy a certain reputation,

  • Does he deserve it?
but knows in his heart he doesn't deserve it.

Did you know that "pride"  means "undue self-esteem?"
