Chapter:
6 “Into Action”

Subject:
  Discussing ourselves with another person

Good morning. Once someone pursuing this spiritual recovery method called “The Steps,” have taken Steps Three and Four and decided to put the Program of Alcoholics Anonymous to the test, they find themselves moving into action.

Today we are talking about the contradiction between what an alcoholic knows about himself  and how he wants others to see him - the gross disparity between the self-image he projects to the outside world and his true stature. His correct “esteem,” (true personal, moral net worth) is considerably lower than the esteem (valuation) that he “advertises” to others.  (NOTE" The "spread" is felt as self-pity.)

RE: memories of the  things he does on his sprees,” and that, “someone might have observed him.”

  • What is his hope?
He hopes they will never see the light of day.
  • Once putting these thoughts behind him, can he feel at peace?
He is under constant fear and tension -

  • Does he have a solution to his constant upset and agitated demeanor?
that makes for more drinking.

  • Are psychologists motivated to like it when we pay them for their ‘help’ (or when Health Plans/State pays them)
Psychologists are inclined to agree with us.

They will "YES" the alcoholic to death! Literally. Rare is the professional who is willing to tell the truth; that they have no solution; that there are no physiologic answers to spiritual problems. There aren't many "Silkworths"  or "Jungs" around with that kind of integrity  There has never been.

  • Do we pay them well to tell them half- truths and ignore their advice?  Three Sentences
We have spent thousands of dollars for examinations.

Today, in many countries, including the United States and the UK, it is the taxpaying citizen who pays for examinations and "treatment." Individuals spend in thousands. Countries spend in billions.

  • How do we regard these services?
We know but few instances where we have given these doctors a fair break. We have seldom told them the whole truth nor have we followed their advice.

Comment:  Might spending time and taxpayer money on counsel from professionals we don’t trust, receiving advice we do not follow, qualify as another indication of insanity?

Might this be considered a "theft of services" later needing to be put on an amends list?
