Chapter:
6 “Into Action”

Subject:
Amends

Read Time: 1 minute

Good morning.

The top of page 77 Please.

  • What are we really trying to do?

At the moment we are trying to put our lives in order.

  • Is that just what this program is all about?
But this is not an end in itself.

  • What is the real purpose of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous?
Our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service to God and the people about us.

Comment:
Can this be achieved by just not drinking and going to meetings?

  • What wouldn’t be a very smart thing to do?
It is seldom wise to approach an individual, who still smarts from our injustice to him, and announce that we have gone religious.

  • To do so would be like doing what?
In the prize ring, this would be called leading with the chin.

This term alludes to a boxer leaving his chin, a vulnerable point, unprotected. When making amends, if you bring up "religion" right away, you become vulnerable. Those who think they are "all set" in their spiritual and religious beliefs will turn bitter toward you, and those who are already ambivalent toward religion will resent your approach as well.
