Chapter: 6 “Into Action”

Subject: Amends

Read Time:  1.5 mins

Good morning, we are still on AMENDS. Just to review for a moment, what exactly is an “amends.” Well, I am sure you have heard many opinions and estimations but what counts is what it meant to those who wrote it. For this study, we consider the common usage of the time, 1938

Amend - to change for the better, 2, to change or alter, formally or with authority, to improve, become better in conduct or ways.

Also, remember that “direct” means - 1. open straightforward truthful 2. Simple, plain without ambiguity; sincere.
~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)

(No "direct" doesn’t mean you can’t use email or a telephone for some amends events, and need to spend $2,000 in airfare  -  otherwise it doesn't count - because the person you have harmed twenty years ago now lives in Argentina. Today we have incredible communications and contact opportunities for approaching these individuals, people we might never have had a chance to approach in preceding eras!)

Today there are people finding online serveries that for free or for 2 or 3 dollars WILL locate people you have harmed in seconds.

Click here to find just about ANYBODY for an amends right now!

We do it why? Because by changing for the better, improving our conduct we are attempting to repair the damages. In most cases, this means we go out to our fellows. This involves making an approach to them.

We are on page 76

  • What is probably true?

Probably there are still some misgivings.

Misgiving - Feeling of doubt or anxiety, apprehension
~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)

As we review the list, how do we feel about some of them?

As we look over the list of business acquaintances and friends we have hurt, we may feel diffident about going to some of them on a spiritual basis.

Diffident 1. Lacking self-reliance, shy modest, retiring.
~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)

  • Can we be assured?

Let us be reassured.

  • Should we immediately try to impress everybody of our spiritual way of life?

To some people we need not, and probably should not emphasize the spiritual feature on our first approach.

FIRST Approach? (Page 77)

  • If we stress too heavily the spirituality on this initial contact, how might it affect them?

We might prejudice them.
Prejudice - 1. Hasty, premature judgment 2. a bias, favorable or unfavorable

Let's face it. People who go about their everyday lives (outside of spiritual fellowship) constantly speaking of spiritual things are generally, well . . . . kookie.  If you come out of left field talking "religion" (Yes, yes, I know you're so, "spiritual, but not religious," (ugh) but that isn't what comes across), you only make yourself unbelievable.

Most ordinary folks who constantly wear where their spirituality or their religions on their shirtsleeves are nuts. The person you are approaching knows this. You will be seen as nuts (And if I have to tell you this then you might well be) and your credibility and ability to truly be helpful within the realm of spirituality will be diminished.

Peace and  Love,
