Chapter
: 6 “Into Action”

Subject: Discussing ourselves with another person

  • Must the ‘understanding person” who is to hear our 5th step be a member of AA?
Perhaps our doctor or psychologist will be the person.

  • What about a family member?
It may be one of our own family,

  • What can we not do if we do decdie to bring a family member into our fifth step experience?
but we cannot disclose anything to our wives or our parents which will hurt them and make them unhappy.

It can be of tremendous benefit to admit to a spouse or parent some of our wrong natures, especially when those flaws have had an impact on the relationship. This can have a cathartic effect on a family - once it becomes apparent to certain members that you are at long last seeing your flaws as they have already seen and have perhaps suffered through for a long time.

  • What is it that we have no right to do?
We have no right to save our own skin at another person's expense
