Make No Bones

Step We Are On: Nine

Page: 78

Chapter: 6 “Into Action”

Subject: Amends

Good morning. Welcome back. We are still on page 78, please. The co-authors are telling us what may be likely while making amends.

  • But, does it really make any difference what their reactions are?

It should not matter, however, if someone does throw us out of his office.

  • What counts most in such an undesirable situation? (Two sentences)

We have made our demonstration, done our part. It's water over the dam.

Comment:  Again, the message is the demonstration of what we do, not what we say. "Amends" does not so much emphasize the spoken word, as it emphasizes behavior. Our verbal contrition is not worth much. Whether or not we have been changed is where the significance lies.

Amend - to change for the better, 2, to change or alter, formally or with authority, to improve, become better in conduct or ways. ~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)

  • Most of us owe what?

Most alcoholics owe money.

Is there really any other way for an alcoholic?
  • Do we shy away from those we owe?

We do not dodge our creditors.

Credit card companies, utilities, the IRS, landlords, Student loans, at al. The co-authors do not imply that all debts must be satisfied today! They tell us not to "dodge," which means:

Dodge – (verb) to practice tricky ways, to escape from, by starting aside. ~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)

  • How freely do why speak regarding the purpose of our discussion and our past alcohol abuse?

Telling them what we are trying to do, we make no bones about our drinking;

To “make no bones of the matter” - to have no hesitation or scruple*; discuss freely. ~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)

  • What do they usually know?

They usually know it anyway, whether we think so or not.

Peace and Love,
