Page 34 - More About Alcoholism

Chapter: Three

Page: 34

Step we are on: Step One

Subject: Non-Spiritual solutions, Powerlessness, Power of Choice

  • How can it be determined whether or not a person can quit, for good and all, on a non-spiritual basis?

Whether such a person can quit upon a nonspiritual basis depends upon the extent to which he has already lost the power to choose whether he will drink or not.

Prior to spiritual awakening a real alcoholic cannot CHOOSE NOT TO DRINK. That power of choice has been lost. This is the obsession caused by spiritual illness at work. Not only are alcoholics obsessive (insane) about alcohol but we are afflicted with spiritual illness as well. Not one but TWO disruptions of our being. One, a disruption of spirit; the other, of mind. ("Physical" side is not mentioned in this particular passage, but don't forget about it either.)

Tomorrow:

  • Have we all felt is was lack of character that prevented us from stopping?
  • What was our tremendous urge?
  • Is a great desire to stop drinking enough?
