The Question of Faith

Page: 53

Step we are on: Step Two

Chapter: "We Agnostics"

Subject: Faith, Intellect, Doubt, Logic, Reason

Good morning. I hope everyone is having a great start to a beautiful weekend. We are learning about this Bridge of Reason sometimes spoken of which the co-authors write.

  • What choice must we make?  Two sentences

God either is, or He isn't. What was our choice to be?

  • With what are we now confronted?

Arrived at this point, we were squarely confronted with the question of faith.

  • Could we ignore it?

We couldn't duck the issue.

  • What have some of us already done?

Some of us had already walked far over the Bridge of Reason toward the desired shore of faith.

Reasoning; intellectual knowledge, is not where we stop.  Thinking can be a means of travel toward faith. It hasn’t the power of faith but can be used to get to it. Like a bridge. Then it is left behind. Like a bridge.

  • What had given us fresh courage?

The outlines and the promise of the New Land had brought lustre to tired eyes and fresh courage to flagging spirits.

(Note:  Did coming to A.A. from a state of hopelessness and seeing and hearing recovered alcoholics tell their stories give you hope?)

The co-authors never pooh-pooh "thinking" entirely. In other sections of this book, they even tell us how God will direct it, once we turn our minds over to His care. They do however spend considerable time putting our ability to reason and logic decision-making into  perspective.

Intellect may not be all that its cracked up to be - but it still can be useful, as a means to an end.

Intuition, is to our ultimate guiding force.

TOMORROW
  • How were we welcomed?
  • How did we feel about our sense of reason?
  • What could we not do?
  • What were we relying on?
  • What do we need to do at this point?

Peace and  Love,
