Chapter: 5 "How It Works"

Subject: Symptoms, Cause, and Effect

Read Time: < 1 Min.

Good morning,

Drinking is not our problem. It's merely one symptom of the complete picture of unsane, depravity. How do we move toward being saved from whatever is the cause?

  • What is the first step in carrying out the decision?
the first step of which is a personal housecleaning, which many of us had never attempted.

  • What was our Third Step decision?
Though our decision was a vital and crucial step,

  • What is necessary for the effect to be a lasting one?
it could have little permanent effect

  • When should we do Step Four?

unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face, and to be rid of, the things in ourselves which had been blocking us.

  • Was alcohol our problem?

Our liquor was but a symptom.

Drinking liquor does not cause our troubles. It is an obsessive behavior that comes as one effect of an original cause. There is a complete picture in the full etiology of what we call “spiritual disease,” that is an effect of what went before it.

Namely, resentment. That is what came first.

Resentment, especially unrecognized resentment with the ensuing negative emotional responses that include anger, fear, frustration, rage, and hatred is the chief and instigating element of all uncovered addicts or alcoholics condition. It is the single metaphysical catalyst for horror that goes beyond human aid.

Without resentment as the primary consideration in the picture of alcoholism, drug addiction or any obsessive behavioral problem, the complete depiction is never seen, the solution never reached.

Get free from anger and you'll never abuse any substance again as long as you live.

This is why counseling, psychological, “talking cures", sober coaching, and pharmaceutical solutions only work temporarily when at all.

These human-aided, clinical approaches assist in masking symptoms, manipulating the brain biochemistry through chemical or psychological means—while the originating cause, anger, remains unchecked and continues to mount.

Addicts and alcoholics become worse, not better when ‘treatments’ go to effects instead of the cause. It's profitable. Facilitators get a sense of purpose and personal satisfaction. The subjects receive a dose of relief.

But ultimately it fails as the individual continues to live an emotionally unstable, depressed, anxious lifestyle, compensating with socially acceptable drugs like nicotine and caffeine and antidepressants, or food and sex – or maybe even a cocktail of them all.
