Step We Are On: Nine

Chapter: 6 “Into Action”

Subject: Angry Wives, Amends, Alimony

Read Time: 2 mins

Good morning. We are talking about broken families, alimony and how the co-authors helped a newcomer approach one particularly dicey case.

  • What was their experience  with broken families

A man we know had remarried. Because of resentment and drinking, he had not paid alimony to his first wife.

  • How did she feel about it and what did she do?  Two sentences

She was furious. She went to court and got an order for his arrest.

This woman was not about to listen to any of that, "I'm going to meetins' now,"  kind of crap.

  • Had he adopted the spiritual principles written about in, “Alcoholics Anonymous.”

He had commenced our way of life,

  • Was his life improving?

had secured a position, and was getting his head above water.
He had the means now.

  • What could he have done?

It would have been impressive heroics if he had walked up to the Judge and said, "Here I am."
Next: The unexpected actions they took with him.

We Must Not Shrink

Step We Are On: Nine

Chapter: 6 “Into Action”

Subject: Amends, Criminal Offenses

Read Time:  < 1 min.

Good morning. We are seeing just how much danger may be involved when making amends.

  • What might be the consequences?

We may lose our position or reputation or face jail,

  • But we must be what?

but we are willing.

Spiritually awakened and contrite does not mean we do not have to pay for our crimes.

  • Is this optional?  (Two sentences)

We have to be. We must not shrink at anything.

Shrink - to draw back, as from danger or threat.

~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)

  • If other people might be involved, what are we not to do? (Two sentences)

Usually, however, other people are involved. Therefore, we are not to be the hasty and foolish martyr who would needlessly sacrifice others to save himself from the alcoholic pit.

A good example of this next. The deadbeat dad. Stay tuned.

Personal Consequences be Damned

Step We Are On: Nine

Chapter: 6 “Into Action”

Subject: Amends, Criminal Offenses

Good morning. Welcome back. We are still on page 78. The co-authors are now addressing some of the other forms that reparations take.

  • Have some of us skipped payments on alimony or child support?
Maybe we are divorced, and have remarried but haven't kept up the alimony to number one.
  • If so, may this have put us in trouble with the law?  Two sentences
She is indignant about it, and has a warrant out for our arrest. That's a common form of trouble too.
  • Although these amends take on many forms, what will we be given?
Although these reparations take innumerable forms, there are some general principles which we find guiding.

Reparation – the act of repairing a mistake,a wrong, an injury , or the like. Pertaining to the act of repairing, restoring or making amends; atonementindemnitycompensation

~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary Encyclopedic Edition (1938)
  • What must we remember?
Reminding ourselves that we have decided to go to any lengths to find a spiritual experience,

Comment:  The following is sometimes referred to as the first “Ninth Step Prayer.”

  • What do we pray to God for?
we ask that we be given strength and direction to do the right thing,
This is why atheists cannot get this far into the 12 steps. Unless they can ask God for strength and direction, they cannot complete this recovery practice. There may be other recovery methods which they will find more amenable to their thinking,  but they cannot complete this one. The 12 steps is a God proposition.

  • Do we proceed even though some our efforts to make restitution are sure to pack some personally undesirable impact on us?
no matter what the personal consequences may be.
Even JAIL? (Yup)
