Page 35 - More About Alcoholism

Page: 35

Step we are on: Step One

Subject: Mental Condition, Jim the Salesman, Insanity, Two Fold illness, Pre-lapse, Relapse, Normal vs. Abnormal

Good morning. We are still on Jim the Salesman' story. The co-authors are carefully reviewing, with Jim. What happened?

Notice they are going over what happened during the time immediately preceding his relapse. This is an extremely important element when working with an alcoholic, who relapses while undergoing this Step process with a sponsor. (Don't forget Jim is stuck on Step Two. Our tip-off to this is that we have been told "he made a beginning". This is how Bill refers to step two in more than place in this book. Had he moved on to step taken Step three, truly "made the decision," he would NOT be in this relapse pickle.)

  • On what did he agree with the A.A.'s?

He agreed he was a real alcoholic and in a serious condition.

  • What did he know would happen if he drank again?

He knew he faced another trip to the asylum if he kept on.

  • Even more important, what else did he know would happen?

Moreover, he would lose his family for whom he had a deep affection.

  • If you gave any thought to what was at risk if you drank, did it keep you from taking the first drink?

  • Yet what did he do?

Yet he got drunk again.

What did the A.A.'s do?

  • We asked him to tell us exactly how it happened.

TOMORROW

  • How was Jim on Tuesday morning?
  • What was the source of his irritation?
  • Did he speak to his boss?
  • What did he decide to do?
  • Along the way, what happened?
  • So, what did he do?
  • Did he stop for a drink?

Peace and Love,
