Queer Ideas

Step we are on: Step One

Subject: Mental Condition, The Jaywalker, Obsession, Insanity

Good morning. Today the co-authors give us their main point of inserting the Jaywalker allegory into their book.

  • To whom do the First 100 compare our behavior?

Our behavior is as absurd and incomprehensible with respect to the first drink as that of an individual with a passion, say, for jay-walking.
That's it. Simple

Absurd
- contrary to reason, sense, propriety, or obvious truth; ridiculous; silly.
Incomprehensible - not to be understood or grasped the mind. -

Winston Simplified Dictionary, 1938

  • What really thrilled this guy?

He gets a thrill out of skipping in front of fast-moving vehicles.

  • Was he having fun?

He enjoys himself for a few years

  • Did his actions bother his friends?

in spite of friendly warnings.

Note: Was your drinking noticed your friends?

  • How did folks label him?

Up to this point you would label him as a foolish chap having queer ideas of fun.

Queer - differing from the ordinary or normal.
The Winston Simplified Dictionary – 1938

The Jaywalker lesson: For the alcoholic, the taking of the first drink, even with the knowledge of the consequence (There is ONE consequence of concern with regard to the 1st drink. It is the ONE and only consequence common to all alcoholics: craving more, the inability to stop) is ridiculous and beyond understanding. Not everyone who jaywalks gets run over by a fire engine, but ALL real alcoholics who drink one drink - crave MORE, once they do. Then of course after that there are the consequences of the consequence -- and that is where troubles are heaped upon trouble. That troubled life we call un-manageability.

And that's all they are saying in Jaywalker allegory. It helps in setting up their full description.
