Strangley Insane

Subject: Mental Condition, The Jaywalker, Insanity, Two Fold illness, Pre-lapse, Relapse, Normal vs. Abnormal

Good morning. How far does our level of intelligence or education get us when it comes to alcohol?

Let's get right to it.

  • As intelligent and as smart as we are, what do we honestly admit?
However intelligent we may have been in other respects, where alcohol has been involved, we have been strangely insane.
We may not all be Brainiacs but some of smartest, best educated folks I have even met - some of the greatest minds - have fallen to alcoholic obsession.
  • Isn't it little harsh to refer to our intelligence in such a diminutive manner?
It's strong language - but isn't it true?

  • Who can stay sober based on self-knowledge?
That may be true of certain nonalcoholic people who, though drinking foolishly and heavily at the present time, are able to stop or moderate, because their brains and bodies have not been damaged as ours were.
  • How well can the actual or potential alcoholic stay away from drinking based on self-knowledge?

But the actual or potential alcoholic, with hardly an exception, will be absolutely unable to stop drinking on the basis of self-knowledge.

NOTE: This is the third mention of the "potential alcoholic" made in this book. More on just what a "potential" alcoholic is here: POTENTIAL
  • What point did the co-authors want to drive home to the reader?
This is a point we wish to emphasize and re-emphasize, to smash home upon our alcoholic readers as it has been revealed to us out of bitter experience. Let us take another illustration.
Tomorrow we will begin our examination of Fred the Accountant - unlike the fictional Jaywalker, Fred's story is REAL and therefor extremely powerful.

Peace & Love,
