Does Faking It Help Make It?

Many of us had moral and philosophical
convictions galore, but we could not live
up to them even though we would have liked to.

Step we are on: Step Two

Chapter: "We Agnostics"

Subject: Belief, Willingness, Morals

Hopefully everyone's had a great weekend.

Page 44, please.

  • If you identify as an atheist or agnostic, why should you not be discouraged?
But cheer up, something like half us thought we were atheists or agnostics.

The co-authors are not agreeing with atheists and agnostics. They are only conceding that they thought they were that way.

It is a common myth heard occasionally in the rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous that Bill Wilson was an atheist prior to his spiritual awakening. That is not true. “I was not an atheist” (p10) he tells us.

It is also sometimes said that Bill W might have been agnostic. Again untrue, as is evident when Bill explains, “I had always believed in a Power greater than myself.” (p 10)

  • What does our experience demonstrate to the atheist or agnostic?
Our experience shows that you need not be disconcerted.

  • Will a code of morals or a good philosophy of living save the real alcoholic?
If a mere code of morals or a better philosophy of life were sufficient to overcome alcoholism, many of us would have recovered long ago.

  • If we really apply ourselves, can we resist the first drink?
But we found that such codes and philosophies did not save us, no matter how much we tried.
  • When we use all our might to put our moral and best philosophy to work, what is still needed?
We could wish to be moral, we could wish to be philosophically comforted, in fact, we could will these things with all our might, but the needed power wasn't there.
Morals and philosophies can’t be faked. "Fake it till you make it"? Not a very AA idea at all, is it?

In fact, it is quite contradictory to the spiritual ideas held by the co-founders of AA as advocated in this book.

Un-recovered alcoholics still do what they know they should not. They drink! (No matter what)

Tomorrow:
  • When we sincerely apply self-will to our human resources, how successful can we be?
  • What is lack of power?
  • To live, what did we have to do?
  • What did it have to be?
  • If that is what we must have to survive, what is the question?
  • Well, where do we find the answer to that most important question?

Peace and  Love,

Danny S – RLRA
