What Is This Book About?

Step we are on: Step Two

Chapter: "We Agnostics"

Subject: Belief, Willingness, Worship, Dilemma

Read Time: 3 mins

Good morning. Today the co-authors of this book tell us what this book is about: (It isn’t what you thought it was.)
  • When we sincerely apply self-will to our human resources, how successful can we be?
Our human resources, as marshaled by the will, were not sufficient; they failed utterly.
  • What was the dilemma of the co-authors?
Lack of power, that was our dilemma.
Oh my! I was told that I was hooked up to an uninterruptable power supply. That God is always flowing no matter what! You mean Power can be interrupted?

Remember what Bill told us about himself and Ebby?

"Had this power originated in him? Obviously it had not. There had been no more power in him than there was in me at the minute; and this was none at all. That floored me". And if you are a "New Thought" devotee trying to reconcile with the 12 steps -- this might floor you too!

Yes! It has been the dilemma:

Dilemma: Situation in which one must choose between two alternatives - both of which are bad. ~ The Winston Simplified Dictionary – 1938

It's a "dilemma" because we have been operating out of only two choices 1) NO POWER or 2) our OWN POWER. Either of them have been insufficient.
  • To live, what did we have to do?
We had to find a power by which we could live,
Damned if you do -- Damned if you don't. That's dilemma!
When the selection has been limited to (i) No Power or (ii) Self-power - and either means ruination, then the only alternative is breaking OUT of the dilemma by finding a New Power

  • What did it have to be?
and it had to be a Power greater than ourselves. Obviously.

  • If that is what we must have to survive, what is the question?
But where and how were we to find this Power?
Well, that's exactly what this book is about.
  • Is that what this book is about?
Well, that's exactly what this book is about.

So the next time someone asks, "What is this book about" you can correctly and EXACTLY quote the co-authors themselves.

This book is about where to find God and how to find God.

It’s that simple and that straightforward and that is clearly stated by the co-authors.   Many people confuse this with the purpose of this book or the main objective of the book. Those are different and distinct and are covered elsewhere in the book. We will get to all of it. Stay tuned.
Tomorrow:
  • What is its main object of this book? (Careful! That’s different from the book’s ‘purpose’ or what it is ‘about’)
  • This Power will do what?
  • Did the coauthors believe their book project was inspired or merely human endeavor?
  • We are going to talk about who?
  • Who will have difficulty with this topic?
Peace and  Love,
