Step we are on: Step Two
Chapter: "We Agnostics"
Subject: Belief, Willingness, Moral, Main Object of the Big Book
Good morning. We are still looking at the Step Two section
of the Book. We have just been told what this book is about. (How and where to find God)
Now we are going to see what the main object of this book is. (Careful! That’s different from the book’s ‘purpose’ or what it is ‘about’)
Now we are going to see what the main object of this book is. (Careful! That’s different from the book’s ‘purpose’ or what it is ‘about’)
- What is its main object of this book?
Its main object is to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself
- This Power will do what?
which will solve your problem.
Comment: Notice that
this is not suggesting that this Power “will show us how," or “help us," “enable us," etc. It is saying that a Power WILL SOLVE OUR PROBLEM!
We don’t do the solving — this Power does!
We don’t do the solving — this Power does!
(" . . . of ourselves we can do nothing”) These guys were
Christian. They were already familiar with this idea.
What problem? Every one of them . . . .as we grow in understanding and
effectiveness in applying this Program.
- Did the co-authors believe their book project was inspired or did they believe it to merely be a human endeavor?
That means we have written a book which we believe to be spiritual as well as moral.
They thought it was BOTH – a book that is spiritual as well
as humanly correct! They recognized the enormity of their task.
Comment: The word
“moral” in 1938* meant “Pertaining to
man’s conception of right and wrong”. ~ *The Winston Simplified Dictionary – 1938
So this passage is simply saying that this book straddles both the spiritual as well as the human sensibility of
what is ‘right’.
- We are going to talk about whom?
And it means, of course, that we are going to talk about God.
The godless (powerless) alkie thinks, "OUCH! Don't tell me I'm going to have face Dad now! Damn! "
- Who will have difficulty with this topic?
Here difficulty arises with agnostics.
- We are going to talk about who?
- Who will have difficulty with this topic?
- What will give the newcomer hope?
- What will dampen his hope?
- Why will this topic disturb him?
Peace and Love,
