Making God Look Bad

"We read wordy books and indulge in windy arguments,
thinking we believe this universe needs no God to explain it."

Step we are on: Step Two

Chapter: "We Agnostics"

Subject: Belief, Willingness, Worship

We are looking at how religious upbringing, falling short of supplying us with the answer to our problems, can be a turnoff to accepting God - damaging open-mindedness to the spiritual principles in this book  - perhaps creating prejudice and doubt.

No wonder the name of this chapter is “We Agnostics” and not “Them Thar Agnostics”

  • Do we understand?
We know how he feels.

  • Is doubt and prejudice uncommon?
We have shared his honest doubt and prejudice.

"With ministers, and the world's religions, I parted right there.
When they talked of a God personal to me, who was love,
superhuman strength and direction, I became irritated
and my mind snapped shut against such a theory." ~Bill W
  • What effect has this had?
Some of us have been violently anti-religious.

  • The word “God” does what to others?
To others, the word "God" brought up a particular idea of Him with which someone had tried to impress them during childhood.

  •  Why did we reject a particular conception?
Perhaps we rejected this particular conception because it seemed inadequate.

This  happened to them, they say, suggesting it may also be the case for the reader.

Should a child’s religious upbringing actually turn them away from God instead of toward Him? Apparently those of us who has been forced to accept alcohol as a solution to our problems instead of God can experience just that; if we identify with these co-authors, anyway.  This is the experience they convey right here in these paragraphs.

"Imagine life without faith! Were nothing
left but pure reason,it wouldn't be life."
QUESTIONS: Has your religious upbringing assisted in your finding God or has it abetted  the rejection of God based, spiritual solutions to your problems all throughout your lifetime? Can that change now?
  •  Once we rejected all ideas, what did we believe?
With that rejection we imagined we had abandoned the God idea entirely.

Wait!  Only "imagined" that we had abandoned God?  Do you mean that despite our running away and rejection of God, we might STILL be in the game?

Then there is light at the ended of this agnostics tunnel! We'll begin to see how tomorrow.

Peace and  Love,
